Fall Frog Calls

Regarding late summer and early fall amphibian calls: Gray Treefrogs will call from trees on warm humid afternoons in late summer and sometimes early fall.  Their fall call is the same as their spring call, but once again, it is a single frog calling and from the trees, rather than from near a breeding site.

Their call is quite different from a fall peeper call.  If you are familiar with Gray Treefrog’s mating call, you should be able to tell the two species apart.

On rare occasions, I have also heard Northern Leopard Frogs call in the fall and a few people have reported hearing Wood Frogs in the fall.  There is also an insect that calls now and sounds suspiciously like an American Toad, so don’t be fooled.
